Women's rights
Women in South Azerbaijan face discrimination twice over: in laws that treat them unequally, and in policies that deny their language and identity.
Iranian law continues to discriminate against women in marriage, divorce, custody, inheritance, travel and dress. Women who challenge these laws, including many from Azerbaijani cities during the "Woman, Life, Freedom" protests of 2022, have faced arrest, prosecution and violence.
We document violations against women and girls, amplify the voices of Azerbaijani women human rights defenders, and advocate for full legal equality.
The law is on their side
- International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, articles 3 and 26
- Universal Declaration of Human Rights, articles 1, 2 and 16
- Iran has not ratified the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). We call on it to do so.
What we document
- Discriminatory family, criminal and civil laws
- Compulsory veiling laws and their violent enforcement
- Gender-based violence and the absence of legal protection
- Persecution of women human rights defenders
- Barriers to education and employment
What we do
- Document cases of gender-based violence and state abuse, with survivors' consent
- Profile and protect Azerbaijani women human rights defenders
- Brief UN mechanisms and the Special Rapporteur on violence against women
- Publish rights guides for women in Azerbaijani, in both scripts
One signature, one message, one shared report can be the difference between a name that is forgotten and a person who is freed.
